Does getting “the black belt” in your niche represent an end?

The black belt

A convenient lie is always safer than an inconvenient truth. In the end, the truth is that there is no finish line, there is no end, we are either growing, evolving, or dying. Most of the time we think that once we get to the finish line, we will be victorious, that once we get that final exam, we will be adults and life is never going to be the same. We believe that once we get the dream job, we will live a fairy tale.

Let me burst that bubble, to drive away that illusion. The end is never the last thing, it is always the beginning of something else.

Birth is the end of a chapter in our lives

More exactly, it is the end of us being part of another person. But that doesn’t mean that we reached the finish line and everything will be better. The thing is that once we are born into this world, the adventure begins, it doesn’t end.

When we go to school on our first day, we are told that this is the end of a chapter, our early childhood. But is it?

Most people believe that when something will happen in their lives, when they will arrive at a certain point, achieve something in their lives, they will be happy. That is just an illusion and a recipe for sadness. When we base our happiness and emotional health on a condition, we are walking on a very fine edge.

An old Japanese parable

Obtaining a black belt in martial arts is a huge accomplishment. It is considered by most, the end goal. There is an old Japanese parable telling a story about a martial artist that was really passionate about martial arts.

The hero of the story kneels before his master sensei one day, in a ceremony of receiving the hard-earned Black Belt. After years of relentless training and effort, the young man has finally reached the pinnacle of success in martial arts. The sensei tells him with a serious voice “Before granting the belt, you must pass one more test”. “I’m ready” the young man responded. “You must answer the essential question… What is the true meaning of the Black Belt?”, sensei said. “A well-deserved reward for my hard work” the young man responded, a little bit surprised by the question. The master waits for a few moments, then he speaks loudly “You are not prepared for the Back Belt. Return in a year”.

A year passes and yet again the student kneels before his master, that asks again “What is the true meaning of the Black Belt?”. This time, the student replies confidently “It is a symbol of distinction and the most important achievement in our beloved art”. Again the master waits for few minutes and unsatisfied says “You are not prepared for the Black Belt. Return in one year”

After another, the year the same thing happens again. The sense asks the same question. Now, the students give the following answer “The Black Belt represents the beginning, not the end. It is the start of a never-ending journey of discipline, hard work, and the pursuit of a higher standard”. The master said smiling now “You are now ready to receive the Black Belt and begin your work”.

The moral of the story

The moral of the story is that every ending, every finish line is just a new beginning. Just as Winston Churchill said, “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning”.

Now it’s YOUR turn

  1. What is the most important goal you have at the moment?
  2. What comes after you achieve your most important goal?
